Efiia Cares Participates in UVA Women's Center Event
Charlottesville, VA - Efiia Cares, a 501c3, not-for-profit organization, is working to get more girls interested in math, science and technology.
On Friday October 14, Lara Donato from Efiia Cares attended a seminar and reception at the University of Virginia Women’s Center in Charlottesville, VA. Efiia Cares looks to utilize lessons learned from the various Women’s Center programs, as well as other mentoring and educational programs, to develop an initiative that introduces girls to or enhances their knowledge of innovative aspects of technology.
The University of Virginia Women’s Center has resources that support women’s issues from domestic violence to mentoring. In particular, a curriculum-based mentoring program through the Women’s Center and the University of Virginia Curry School of Education unites college women and middle school girls in the Charlottesville area. This mentoring program, called Young Women Leaders Program, addresses issues facing adolescent girls ranging from bullying to self-image.
While Young Women Leaders Program is not strictly focused on academics, its long-term success provides a valuable case study for best practices.
“Young Women Leaders Program has been a successful, influential, and growing program for more than a decade. I could not think of a more experienced group of individuals who could provide unmatched resources for such an important cause,” says Lara Donato of the Efiia Group. “As a former Young Women Leaders Program Big Sister, I needed to find a way to integrate incredibly meaningful past experiences into the work I am doing now with the Efiia Group.”
Based on Efiia Cares participation in this seminar at the Women’s Center, Efiia Cares is defining its next pro bono initiative to support this great cause!
