Colonel David Sutherland Joins Efiia Cares Board of Advisors
Washington, DC - On May 4, 2012, Colonel David Sutherland was announced as the newest addition to the Efiia Cares Board of Advisors. Colonel Sutherland will provide expert direction and knowledge in veterans' affairs ventures and projects.
Efiia Cares has developed a long-standing relationship with Colonel Sutherland. In April 2011, Efiia Cares worked with Colonel Sutherland and his team on Mrs. Obama’s Joining Forces campaign. The Joining Forces initiative aims to increase awareness and action at the community level in support of military family needs. Efiia Cares and Colonel Sutherland worked in conjunction with Leadership 18 to support project management and development.
Colonel Sutherland is the former Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Warrior & Family Support. Colonel Sutherland has served in staff positions at Battalion through Division, and has also commanded at all levels from Platoon through Brigade. As a Company Commander he deployed to South West Asia as part of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. While commanding 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team “Greywolf", 1st Cavalry Division Sutherland deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Colonel Sutherland served as the Coalition Force Commander in Diyala Province, Iraq from October 2006 – December 2007, which included surge operations. In July 2008, Colonel Sutherland was assigned to the Joint Staff as the Division Chief in J5 (Plans, Policy and Strategy), Middle East Region. Colonel Sutherland's final assignment prior to retirement was as a direct report to the CJCS. Awards and decorations include, among others, the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Joint Commendation Medal, Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman's Badge Second Award and Senior Parachutist Badge.
